Volunteers Needed to Build James Island Home

Rural Mission staff took one look at Mrs. Green's home last year at 1804 Battery Island Drive in the Sol Legare Road Community of James Island and knew that it could not be saved. Even though this small home close to the marsh survived the fury and flooding of Hurricane Hugo in 1989, old age and decay has taken its toll. In early 2008, the old home was demolished and all the furniture and belongings of a lifetime for this elderly grandmother were put into storage. A grant from Charleston County has made this possible. Volunteers and Rural Mission staff have done the rest.

James Island Home

The Mission is extremely grateful for the love and caring provided by volunteers from far and near, including volunteer church workteams from: Colonial Heights United Methodist Church in Kingsport, Tenn., First United Methodist Church in Palmyra, Penn., Diller Mennonite Church in Newville, Penn., and Rising Sun United Methodist Church in Rising Sun, Indiana. Our sincere thanks go to these far-away friends who have blessed this family!

We are working hard to complete this home as quickly as we can. As of this writing, the roof installation will be largely completed.

We Need Volunteers to Keep this Work Going!

Please contact the Mission at (843) 768-1720 to inquire about assisting with this project. There is work for everyone, skilled or unskilled. Just bring a willing heart and a desire to help this elderly individual return to her new home.
