The Rural Mission, Inc. has taken a major step forward as it works to position itself for continued service and ministry for its second 40 years of caring. Recently the Mission’s Board of Directors took the step of approving a plan to expand the size of the Board to welcome new members. With these new members comes much promise and expectation to become more stable financially, to be more visible and to grow in service to those in need. The continuing recession economy has challenged all non-profits and charities to carefully and strategically reexamine their mission, strengths and challenges. For the Rural Mission Board and staff, survival is not simply enough. The Mission must broaden its reach throughout the impoverished region it serves in lower Charleston County. Overwhelming numbers are asking for help. Requests for assistance have doubled in less than two years to over 750 today needing a decent, safe home.

At its May 27, 2010 meeting, the Board of Directors said a grateful and heartfelt goodbye and thank you to two longtime members as they welcomed five new members. Mr. James Moss has served faithfully on the Board representing Charleston County Council member Curtis Inabinett. Mr. Inabinett is retiring from County Council. Rev. Albert “Chick” Morrison is leaving the Board after more than 20 years of service. Rev. Morrison is pastor of New First Baptist Church of Edisto Island and he has been a wonderful supporter of the Rural Mission who will be missed.

Those continuing on the Board are Mrs. Miriam Green, Chairperson, Mr. Abraham “Bill” Jenkins who serves as Vice-Chairman, Ms. Joy Stoney, Mrs. Jean Doscher and Mr. Mickey Seabrook.

Retiring, dedicated Board member, Rev. Albert Morrison (center) has served on the Rural Mission Board for over 20 years. He is being congratulated by Vice-Chariman Bill Jenkins and Director Linda D. Gadson.

New Board members include: Mr. Robert Vingi,Jr., Mrs. Tumiko Rucker, Town Manager, Town of Kiawah Island, Dr. David Rivers, Dir. for Public Information and Community Outreach, MUSC, Mr. Michael Todd, retired nonprofit executive, living on Johns Island, and Mr. Andy Sarosy, Blackbaud Corporation.

Thank you for helping the Mission to grow stronger!
